The Argentine is also set to agree personal terms as he brings the curtain down on a tumultuous four-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.
The move was sanctioned by new manager Manuel Pellegrini. City director of football Txiki Begiristain was in Turin on Tuesday to thrash out the deal with his Juventus counterparts.
The Serie A side will pay an initial £7.6m with the remainder of the fee dependent on various clauses being met during what is believed to be a three-year deal for the 29-year-old forward.
However, the deal is worth considerably more in real terms for the Premier League club, with Tevez one of the highest earners at the Etihad on a reported £196,000-a-week.
The Argentina international has spent an eventful seven years in England, beginning with his move to West Ham in 2006 which was dogged with controversy.
Tevez's goals kept the Hammers in the top flight but the Londoners were fined a massive £5.5m due to his third-party ownership status.
However, Hughes was replaced by Roberto Mancini just six months later and Tevez frequently clashed with the Italian.
That came to a head in Munich in September 2011 when Tevez refused to warm-up during a Champions League defeat to Bayern.
Mancini vowed he would never play for the club again and Tevez was subsequently put on "gardening leave" but after a January exit failed to materialise, he was allowed to return to the fold in February 2012 and helped lead City to their first league title for 44 years.
